Swissport Ground Staff at Palma Announce Timed Partial Strikes

The union says the short, scheduled walkouts are designed to force better heat protections, staffing and pay and may slow passenger processing at Palma during the summer peak.

Overview

  • The union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) announced the partial, time-limited walkouts on Thursday, July 23, with strikes planned for 28 July and for 1, 4 and 8 August during 07:00–12:00 and 19:00–22:00.
  • CCOO says the actions press Swissport to introduce heat-protection measures, raise staffing levels, improve work organisation and apply the sector collective agreement in full.
  • Talks between employee representatives and Swissport ended without an agreement but the union says it remains open to further negotiations.
  • Spanish minimum-service rules limit how many workers may join the strikes, so authorities and airlines expect delays and longer queues for passengers rather than widespread flight cancellations.
  • Swissport handles ground services for carriers including Condor, TUI and Marabu at Palma, so the targeted stoppages during the summer peak could strain check-in, baggage handling and boarding and increase wait times for travellers.
