Swiss A330 Diverts to Bangor After Onboard Smoke Report

An FAA probe will examine reported smoke on board to determine the cause and assess safety implications.

Overview

  • Swiss flight LX16, an A330-300 registered HB-JHK, declared an emergency and diverted to Bangor International Airport after the crew squawked 7700 and requested an immediate landing on Monday, July 27, 2026.
  • Crew and flight-tracking data show the aircraft descended from cruise altitude as it approached Nova Scotia before the diversion was requested after smoke was seen in the forward Business Class cabin.
  • After the A330 landed and stopped on the runway, fire crews performed thermal and visual inspections, no fire was found, and SWISS confirmed all 208 passengers and crew were safe.
  • The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation and the aircraft remains under inspection while SWISS coordinates passenger onward travel and awaits inspection results.
  • Bangor is a regular diversion field for transatlantic flights because of its long runways and low traffic, and the same A330 returned to service in June after a separate April engine failure incident that led to an evacuation, which regulators may consider during the current probe.
