Sweden Seeks to Block EU Rollout of Tesla's FSD Over Speed Offset

Sweden's call to remove a feature that lets Tesla exceed posted limits could prevent the EU from turning national clearances into a single bloc approval.

Overview

  • Sweden's Transport Administration has formally recommended the EU committee vote against a Europe-wide approval of Tesla's FSD (Supervised) unless Tesla removes the 'Speed Offset' that permits automated driving above posted speed limits.
  • The EU Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles will discuss the Dutch-backed approval on June 30, and a later qualified‑majority vote will be needed to adopt or reject the measure for all 27 member states.
  • The Netherlands granted a provisional type approval in April and several countries — Belgium, Denmark, Lithuania and Estonia — have since recognised that approval and begun preparations for over‑the‑air rollouts of FSD to eligible cars.
  • Other regulatory worries include how FSD behaves in winter or icy conditions and whether driver‑monitoring is effective; Sweden's national type‑approval agency and the Swedish Transport Agency have raised these concerns in talks with the Dutch regulator and Tesla.
  • If the EU vote rejects the Dutch proposal, the Netherlands' provisional approval would lapse after six months and national recognitions based on it could be withdrawn, which would slow Tesla's commercial rollout and limit access tied to specific hardware and subscriptions.
