Sweden Says Drone Near French Carrier Was Russian, Kremlin Disputes

Electronic jamming by a Swedish patrol stopped the aircraft near Malmö during the carrier’s visit.

Overview

  • The Swedish Armed Forces said a technical analysis determined the neutralized drone that approached the Charles de Gaulle was of Russian origin.
  • A Swedish Navy vessel, HMS Rapp, detected the activity roughly 13 km from Malmö in the Öresund and used electronic countermeasures to sever the drone’s control.
  • Sweden reported the Russian intelligence ship Zhigulevsk was in its territorial waters during the incident and was later escorted into the Baltic Sea.
  • French officials, including Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, said the carrier’s security was never endangered and praised Sweden’s response.
  • The Kremlin rejected Sweden’s attribution as absurd, as Swedish military and coastguard investigations continue, including a separate probe into a local fuel spill.
