Sweden Says Drone Near French Carrier Was Russian After Malmö Intercept

Officials say the carrier’s operations were unaffected after Swedish defenses jammed the device during a port call in the Öresund.

Overview

  • The Swedish Armed Forces said a technical analysis identified the drone neutralized near Malmö as Russian and deemed its flight unauthorized under Swedish territorial access rules.
  • A Swedish Navy vessel detected the device roughly 13 kilometers from the Charles de Gaulle and used electronic countermeasures to disrupt it before contact was lost.
  • Sweden reported the Russian intelligence ship Zhigulevsk was transiting nearby and said a patrol vessel later escorted it out of Swedish territorial waters.
  • French military spokesman Col. Guillaume Vernet said the Swedish-hosted protection system functioned correctly and the carrier group’s activity was not affected.
  • Defense Minister Pål Jonson criticized Russia and cited intensified intelligence activity, as officials place the episode within wider suspected Russian hybrid operations tracked across Europe since 2022.
