Sweden Pledges 16 Donated Gripens and Backing for Purchase of Up to 20 New Jets for Ukraine

The plan ties EU loan financing for new Gripen E/F aircraft to a Swedish donation, expands pilot training, and advances delivery and industrial planning.

Overview

  • Sweden and Ukraine announced a two-track package on Thursday that backs Kyiv’s intent to buy up to 20 Saab JAS 39 Gripen E/F using €2.5 billion from the EU Ukraine Support Loan while Sweden intends to donate 16 older Gripen C/D aircraft.
  • Swedish officials and Saab say negotiations, export approvals and contract signings are still pending and Saab has not yet received or signed any related orders.
  • Ukrainian pilots and technicians have already started training in Sweden and Stockholm aims to begin deliveries of donated C/D jets in early 2027 with new-build E/F deliveries planned on a multi-year schedule starting around 2030.
  • Gripen’s short-field design and compatibility with long-range Meteor missiles are cited as operational gains that would let Ukraine operate from dispersed bases and extend intercept range beyond current F-16 capabilities.
  • The deal depends on formal EU loan disbursement, export permits and Saab production capacity, and it creates workshare and industrial opportunities in countries such as the UK and Canada while adding logistics and training demands for Ukraine’s air force.
