Sweden Funds Tridon Mk2 Air-Defense Guns for Ukraine as BAE Wins FMV Contract

A new FMVBAE Systems deal confirms production of radar-equipped, C2-ready units for transfer to Kyiv.

Overview

  • Ukraine’s defense ministry, in a Monday statement, said Sweden will spend €400 million to buy Tridon Mk2 systems for donation, which is about one-third of a €1.2 billion package announced in February.
  • BAE Systems won a $180 million contract from Sweden’s defence procurement agency FMV to build TRIDON Mk2 units that come with Saab Giraffe 1X radar, command-and-control systems, spare parts, and advanced 3P ammunition.
  • The mobile system uses a 40 mm Bofors 40 Mk4 gun that can reach targets up to 12 km away and fire 300 rounds per minute, with a 200 rpm mode to save ammunition.
  • Programmable airburst rounds detonate in front of the target to throw fragments through the air, which is designed to tear down Shahed-type drones and also threaten cruise missiles.
  • The gun mounts on Scania trucks or BvS 10 tracked vehicles with electric drives for easy integration, supporting a flexible, mobile shield for troops and key sites.
