Sweden Awards Freire Shipyard Contract for Four 47-Meter Naval Support Vessels

Sweden will fit military systems after delivery under FMV’s civilian‑hull procurement model.

Overview

  • FMV confirmed an order with Vigo-based Freire Shipyard for four naval support vessels for the Swedish Armed Forces.
  • The ships are specified at 47 m by 10.5 m and about 840 tonnes, with accommodation for 16, a top speed of 12 knots, 10 days’ endurance, over 60 tonnes of cargo capacity, and more than 100 m³ of fuel space.
  • Propulsion will be diesel‑electric with variable‑speed generators feeding azimuth propellers, designed to reduce emissions and operate in ice and extreme weather.
  • Each unit will carry two main deck cranes plus an auxiliary provisions crane and a foldable stern ramp to enable autonomous loading and vehicle access.
  • Design is attributed to Sweden’s Saltech Consultants AB and local media report deliveries are scheduled for 2030, reinforcing Vigo’s role in Sweden’s fleet renewal.
