Overview
- The museum soft-opened to the public on 30 August and is now accessible to visitors, following preview exhibitions that preceded the launch.
- The complex covers 60,000 m² and is organized as a village of twelve interconnected pavilions under a continuous, ribbon-like roof that reads as a graphic figure from above.
- A central lang, the covered corridor drawn from Suzhou garden tradition, traces a main route between galleries while smaller paths, bridges and tunnels connect above- and below-ground spaces.
- Opening programming includes BIG’s material-focused show Materialism, a Picasso presentation and a large survey of contemporary Chinese art, supporting cross-cultural exchange and changing exhibitions over time.
- BIG’s first completed art museum was delivered with partners ARTS Group, VIA.inc and SHUISHI, and its long-term success will depend on whether public programming and visitor flows make the site a porous civic link to the waterfront rather than an isolated landmark.
