SUV Driven by 74-Year-Old Crashes Into Mulund Vegetable Stall, Killing Vendor

Police say the driver panicked and accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake, and investigators have detained him and filed negligence and traffic charges.

Overview

  • The crash occurred when a Kia Seltos driven out of the Nirmal City of Joy complex struck a roadside vegetable stall on Thursday evening, injuring several people and creating immediate panic among residents.
  • One woman vendor, identified as Jyoti/Niyati Shah, was pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital, and reports about the two-year-old who was critically hurt are inconsistent with some outlets saying the child later died.
  • Mulund police detained the driver, Mohan Sheshadri, seized the vehicle (MH-12 SO 6740), and registered cases under sections including 106, 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
  • Police and witnesses say Sheshadri told investigators he saw an approaching truck, swerved to avoid it and, in panic, allegedly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to mount the footpath and hit bystanders.
  • Authorities continue their probe with questioning and evidence collection while the community and the victims’ families cope with the loss and hospitals treat the injured; the case could proceed through bailable charges while investigations determine further legal steps.
