SUV Crashes Into Saugus Speedway Pumps, Triggers Small Fire

Investigators are reviewing the cause, with the driver under hospital evaluation.

Overview

  • Fire crews contained a brief blaze after a gray SUV struck two pumps at the Speedway on Broadway in Saugus.
  • Saugus Fire Capt. William Cross III said the flames were too small to trigger the station’s overhead suppression system.
  • Cross credited automatic shut-offs inside the pumps and a fast emergency stop for cutting fuel and limiting the fire.
  • Employee Joshua Grady said he hit the emergency shut-off after hearing the crash and saw the driver crawl out of the passenger side.
  • The driver was taken to a hospital for evaluation, the station remains closed, and the cause is under investigation with no charges announced.
