Driver Crashes SUV Into MBTA Fitchburg Line Train at Concord Crossing

The collision hospitalized the driver, prompted an active investigation into what happened, and has renewed concern about the safety of local grade crossings.

Overview

  • A woman driving a 2019 Mazda struck the side of a moving Fitchburg Line train at the Sudbury Road crossing in Concord on Monday evening after she said she accidentally hit the gas pedal.
  • The driver was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and about 60 passengers on the train were evacuated and moved to another train while crews cleared the scene.
  • MBTA Transit Police said all warning equipment at the crossing was working at the time, and sky footage showed heavy front-end damage to the SUV and a dislodged crossing arm.
  • Keolis and the MBTA canceled at least one Fitchburg Line train and reported residual delays as emergency crews, Concord police, and Concord fire secured the crossing and investigators opened inquiries.
  • The crash follows a similar Aug. 9 grade-crossing incident in the region and could prompt new scrutiny of crossing layout, signage, lighting, and operational safeguards as officials probe causes.
