Suspended Sentence and Driving Ban for Southampton Driver in Fatal 2022 Crossing Crash

Court evidence found he was travelling well above the 30mph limit before striking Clare Munn at a pedestrian crossing.

Overview

  • Martin Hayward was sentenced to 34 weeks in prison suspended for 18 months, disqualified from driving for 18 months, ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and 30 rehabilitation days, and fined £4,500.
  • Hayward was convicted on January 19 of causing death by careless driving following a trial at Southampton Crown Court.
  • Judge William Mousley KC said Clare Munn might not have died if Hayward had obeyed the speed limit and noted limited remorse but a realistic prospect of rehabilitation.
  • Police expert analysis and a petrol-station video indicated Hayward was travelling between about 44 and 56mph on the 30mph road and that Munn was carried roughly 41m on the bonnet.
  • Munn’s family issued a statement expressing devastation, thanking emergency services and members of the public, and requesting privacy as they grieve.
