Suspended Mass. State Police Sergeant Pleads Not Guilty in Fatal Woburn Crash

Prosecutors are also examining how State Police handled the crash disclosures.

Overview

  • Scott Quigley, a Massachusetts State Police sergeant, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to felony motor vehicle homicide and was released on personal recognizance with orders not to contact certain witnesses.
  • The judge set a pretrial conference for June 9 in Middlesex Superior Court after prosecutors brought the case through a Suffolk County team due to Quigley’s prior assignment to the Middlesex DA’s office.
  • Prosecutors say Quigley crossed the center line in Woburn on Dec. 12, 2023 and struck a wheelchair van while speeding to about 59 mph in a 35 mph zone after a bar stop where two detectives ordered six drinks between them.
  • Hospital records reported blood alcohol readings between 0.095 and 0.10, above the 0.08 legal limit, while Quigley’s lawyer disputes any impairment and calls the crash a tragic accident.
  • The collision killed passenger Angelo Schettino, 37, who used a wheelchair, and the case drew renewed scrutiny after body-camera footage and filings in an unrelated murder case surfaced, leading to a POST certification suspension and an ongoing review of State Police reporting lapses.
