Suspect Turned Over to ICE After Crash That Struck FHP Trooper

The transfer brings immigration authorities into a criminal probe that FHP says will include charges for leaving the scene with injuries and driving without a license.

Overview

  • A Chevy Avalanche crossed a grass median and struck a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser, after which the driver fled on foot and the trooper suffered only minor injuries.
  • Local and state officers searched the area and arrested a person who was later transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement because of the individual’s reported immigration status.
  • FHP spokesman Indiana Miranda said the agency will file charges for leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and for driving without a license, and the investigation remains open.
  • The collision blocked the roadway near Beeline Highway and Jog Road and drew assistance from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Palm Beach Gardens police.
  • Reporting identified the suspect as Jacnel Thermutus with limited sourcing, and authorities say the next steps to watch are formal criminal filings and any actions ICE takes while the probe continues.
