Suspect in OpenAI Attacks Charged With Attempted Murder of Sam Altman

Prosecutors describe a planned, ideology-driven attack targeting AI leaders.

Overview

  • Prosecutors on Monday charged 20-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama with attempted murder and federal explosives offenses, and the FBI searched his home in Spring, Texas.
  • Police say Moreno-Gama on Friday threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s San Francisco home around 4 a.m., then went to OpenAI’s headquarters about an hour later, threatened to burn it down, and was arrested with kerosene and incendiary devices.
  • A three-part document recovered from the suspect titled “Your Last Warning” denounced AI, listed names and addresses of other industry figures, and stated an intent to kill Altman while warning of humanity’s “impending extinction.”
  • Following Sunday’s reported gunfire near the same residence, police arrested Amanda Tom, 25, and Muhamad Tarik Hussein, 23, seized three guns, and booked both on negligent-discharge counts, and no injuries were reported in either incident.
  • Officials are weighing a domestic-terrorism designation if evidence shows an effort to coerce policy, and Altman urged a cooler public debate about AI after posting a family photo to discourage copycat attacks.
