Overview
- Donald James Joseph Arthur Fields, 48, allegedly abducted a 16-year-old from a Hamtramck bus stop around 7:05 a.m. Monday after pressing a handgun to her back and forcing her into a van.
- Classmates tracked the teen’s phone and relayed the location to police, who converged on a Sunoco at Conant and Nevada about 30 minutes later as the victim mouthed “help” to clerk Abdulrahman Abohatem.
- Officers arrested Fields at the gas station, seized a handgun, and impounded his van, and authorities say the teen was sexually assaulted in the vehicle before the rescue.
- Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Fields with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, felonious assault, felony firearm, and felon in possession of a firearm, and a judge ordered him held without bond after Thursday’s arraignment as a habitual offender.
- Hamtramck police say the attack appears random with no ongoing threat to the community, and surveillance video plus 911 audio obtained by media document the abduction and the rapid response now proceeding in Wayne County court.
