Suspect Arrested in 2004 Moreno Valley Killing After Cold-Case Review

Detectives say a renewed examination of the unsolved homicide produced new leads that led to a Hesperia arrest.

Overview

  • Corey Sampson, 45, of Hesperia, was arrested on March 19 and charged with murder in the 2004 shooting death of 29-year-old Israel Rangel.
  • Deputies responded just before 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 1, 2004 to the 15000 block of Perris Boulevard in Moreno Valley and found Rangel with multiple gunshot wounds; he later died at a hospital.
  • Investigators had identified Sampson as a suspect years ago but lacked sufficient evidence to file charges, and the case went cold.
  • The Sheriff’s Office revisited the case during its unsolved-homicide review, developed new leads, arrested Sampson in Hesperia with help from the District Attorney’s Gang Impact Team, and booked him at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility.
  • Authorities have not disclosed a motive or any relationship between Sampson and Rangel, the investigation remains active, and the public is urged to contact Master Investigator Robertson or Deputy Lucifora at 951-955-2777.
