Overview
- - Matthew Andres, testifying Tuesday, said a man shot him through the arm on a rural road east of Calgary, demanded his truck keys, and forced him to run and hide in a field.
- - The Crown told jurors the assailants set fire to a stolen truck, failed to drive off in Andres’ stuck vehicle, then rushed a second truck and fatally shot 45-year-old county worker Colin Hough before fleeing in his vehicle.
- - Prosecutors said a semi-truck camera captured Hough’s final minutes, and investigators recovered a .45-calibre projectile where he collapsed and a 9-mm casing near where Andres was hit.
- - Arthur Penner, 37, and Elijah (also reported as Blake) Strawberry, 29, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and attempted murder as their jury trial opened in Alberta’s Court of King’s Bench with a schedule of about one month.
- - Police later found Hough’s truck abandoned, arrested Penner five days after the Aug. 6, 2024 shootings, and located Strawberry about a month later on the O’Chiese First Nation, as the court also heard Andres’ frantic 911 call.
