Survey: Nearly One-Third of Germany's Pets Sleep in Owners' Beds

Germany's animal welfare group urges parasite control as the condition for safe bed-sharing with pets.

Overview

  • German respondents reported most pets sleep in their own basket or cage at 52%, with 27% on sofas and 18% wherever the animal chooses.
  • Switzerland showed the lowest bed-sharing rate in the country comparison at about one fifth of pet owners.
  • The poll was conducted by YouGov for online retailer Galaxus and surveyed 1,041 people in Germany aged 15 to 79.
  • The Deutscher Tierschutzbund says sharing a bed with dogs or cats is generally fine when regular deworming is maintained and animals are free of fleas and ticks.
  • The federation warns that small mammals such as rabbits and guinea pigs should not sleep in beds due to crushing risks and their need for social contact and secure enclosures.
