Surgeon Vahid Reza Adib Suspended From Practising

The Office of the Health Ombudsman has imposed an interim ban that will remain until QCAT or the Health Ombudsman ends it; the move removes him from patient care as his criminal case heads back to court in July.

Overview

  • The Office of the Health Ombudsman posted a suspension effective Tuesday that prohibits Vahid Reza Adib from practising and the restriction is also recorded on the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency register.
  • Adib is charged with three counts of rape, two counts of deprivation of liberty and one count of sexual assault over an alleged March 30 incident at his Burleigh Heads apartment, and he denies the allegations.
  • Court documents show Adib surrendered his passport as a condition of bail and his criminal matter has been adjourned to July 7 for the next court appearance.
  • Uniting Care told reporters that Adib is not currently accredited to operate at Wesley Hospital, and his long-standing private bariatric clinic in Brisbane is part of his professional background dating to 2004.
  • The suspension is an interim regulatory step that could be set aside by the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal or revoked by the Health Ombudsman, and the case has drawn public attention because of Adib’s relationship with former premier Annastacia Palaszczuk despite there being no suggestion of her involvement.
