Supreme Court Sets April 7–22 Hearings Before Nine-Judge Bench on Sabarimala Review

The proceedings will define how courts scrutinize ‘essential’ religious practices across faiths.

Overview

  • The bench allocated April 7–9 for parties supporting review, April 14–16 for opponents, with rejoinders on April 21 and concluding submissions on April 22.
  • Written arguments are due March 14, and the Chief Justice will separately notify the nine-judge bench’s composition.
  • Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the Centre backs reopening the 2018 ruling that permitted women of all ages to enter the Sabarimala temple.
  • The reference also includes cases on Muslim women’s entry to mosques and dargahs, Parsi women in fire temples, and Dawoodi Bohra excommunication and FGM, alongside seven framed questions on Articles 25–26, morality, judicial review, “sections of Hindus,” and PIL standing.
  • In Kerala, the state government signalled caution on its position as the opposition and community bodies such as the Nair Service Society and SNDP urged a revised affidavit opposing unrestricted entry.
