Supreme Court Pulls Up CBI, Sets October 17 Hearing on Plea Against Rajeev Kumar’s Anticipatory Bail

The bench questioned the probe agency’s inaction since 2019, scheduling a consolidated hearing with related pleas.

Overview

  • Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran listed the CBI’s challenge for October 17 and agreed to hear it with other pending matters, including a contempt plea.
  • “Why should we keep this matter pending? You have done nothing during all these years,” the CJI told the CBI while taking up the case on Monday.
  • Solicitor General Tushar Mehta pressed to club connected petitions, citing earlier incidents faced by CBI officers during the probe.
  • Rajeev Kumar’s counsel said the IPS officer, granted anticipatory bail by the Calcutta High Court on October 1, 2019, has not been called for questioning even once in six years.
  • The CBI says custodial interrogation is needed and alleges evidence tampering, which Kumar denies, in a case stemming from the 2013 Saradha chit fund collapse that the Supreme Court moved to the CBI in 2014.
