Overview

  • The court directed the Union to preserve Rapid Action Force ammunition logs and earlier-ordered CCTV, drone and bodycam footage to secure evidence in the July 20 Jantar Mantar protests.
  • The bench instructed the Delhi government to ensure the best possible medical treatment for named petitioners and other people injured with alleged pellet wounds.
  • The petition filed by Yashovardhan Azad and injured protesters Prashant Kumar Singh and Sheikh Irshad Mansoori says metallic pellets were fired and surgically recovered from victims.
  • The court declined to impose a blanket ban on pellet guns, saying that challenge is legally vague unless the underlying police standing orders and SOPs are directly attacked, and it asked the Union to place those rules on record.
  • Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured preservation of investigatory material while official statements in Parliament denying any firing remain in dispute, and the case could prompt new guidelines, compensation claims or a direct legal challenge to rules authorising pellet use.
