Supreme Court Orders CBI Takeover of Twisha Sharma Death Probe

The court said a central inquiry is needed to address claims of judicial bias and to allow a fresh forensic and witness review under independent supervision.

Overview

  • Twisha Sharma, 33, was found hanging at her matrimonial home on May 12 and her family lodged an FIR accusing her husband Samarth Singh and mother-in-law Giribala Singh of dowry harassment.
  • Samarth Singh surrendered after being untraceable for about ten days and was remanded to police custody for seven days on May 23.
  • On Monday the Supreme Court took suo motu notice of media reports and ordered a central probe to remove doubts about institutional influence and ensure an impartial inquiry.
  • A second autopsy by an AIIMS medical team has been completed and a CBI Special Investigation Team is mobilising to Bhopal to collect files, re-register the FIR, re-record statements and reconstruct the scene, with plans to seek central custody of the prime accused.
  • The Madhya Pradesh High Court has adjourned hearings on challenges to Giribala Singh’s anticipatory bail until May 27 and the top court urged both families and the media to avoid public statements that could prejudice the investigation.
