Supreme Court Gives FSSAI Four Weeks to Respond on Front-of-Pack Warning Labels

The directive follows the court’s view that FSSAI’s compliance efforts have yielded no concrete result.

Overview

  • The order dated February 10 directs the food regulator to file a fresh reply on a proposal for warning-style labels on products high in sugar, salt and saturated fat.
  • The bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K V Viswanathan recorded the petitioners’ suggestion for on-pack warnings and framed the issue as linked to citizens’ right to health.
  • A PIL by public charitable trust 3S and Our Health Society seeks mandatory front-of-package warnings across pre-packaged foods.
  • In a January 30 affidavit, FSSAI said it will pursue additional research, systematic product mapping, consumer surveys and wider stakeholder consultations before moving forward.
  • FSSAI’s Expert Committee reported no stakeholder consensus on the 2022 Indian Nutrition Rating model and algorithm concerns, and a 2025 draft labelling amendment was deferred at the Food Authority’s November 24 meeting.
