Supreme Court Freezes Haryana’s Aravalli Safari Until Experts Define Range

The court tied any move on the project to a pending expert-led determination of what constitutes the Aravalli range.

Overview

  • The bench refused Haryana’s plea to submit a revised detailed project report to the Central Empowered Committee or to have the CEC examine it, saying the court will assess the matter independently.
  • Chief Justice Surya Kant said “not a single inch” of the ecologically sensitive range will be permitted for any use until a clear, scientific definition is finalized.
  • Haryana told the court it has scaled the project from 10,000 acres to just over 3,300 acres and framed it as a conservation-driven eco‑tourism plan with 30% enclosures and 70% green zone.
  • The challenge is led by five retired Indian Forest Service officers and NGO People for Aravalis, who warn the safari would spur construction and damage already fragile habitats.
  • The court earlier kept a 100‑metre height-based definition in abeyance and is moving toward an independent expert panel, with related Aravalli matters expected to be heard on February 26.
