Supreme Court Directs Kerala Governor to Decide on Vice-Chancellor Appointments Promptly

The bench said the Dhulia panel report demands consideration, with the case listed next week for review.

Overview

  • The court noted that Justice (Retd.) Sudhanshu Dhulia’s report on two VC appointments was sent to the Chief Minister and then forwarded to the Governor, who has yet to act on it.
  • Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Viswanathan rejected the explanation about missing records, stating the report from a former Supreme Court judge cannot be treated as routine paperwork.
  • The bench said it expects a decision in accordance with the committee’s report and indicated it will evaluate the Governor’s decision when it is placed before the court.
  • The matter was posted for further hearing next Friday, December 5, with the bench expecting the Chancellor’s decision to be presented.
  • In September, the Governor sought to modify the court’s August 18 order that allowed the Chief Minister to recommend names, even as Kerala ministers now publicly press the Governor to change course.
