Overview
- On Monday the Supreme Court asked the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to examine creating up to two exclusive trial courts — one for CBI matters and one for NIA matters — and directed the high court’s registrar general to file a feasibility report before the next hearing.
- The Court recorded investigation figures showing the CBI is handling 31 Manipur-related cases with final reports in 27 and 904 witnesses cited of whom 891 remain to be examined, while the NIA has 30 cases with chargesheets in 15 and charges framed in seven.
- The bench ordered officials to compile particulars and case numbers for all matters where chargesheets have been filed so victims, families and lawyers can access reports and track proceedings.
- The Court asked the apex-appointed committee led by Justice Gita Mittal to verify petitioner claims that roughly 24,000 affected families have not received rehabilitation benefits and to check property and encroachment complaints against submitted lists.
- Noting July security incidents such as road blockades and attacks on security personnel, the Court directed the SIT, CBI and NIA to continue investigations and told state and central agencies to ensure full cooperation so trials can proceed more quickly.
