Overview
- An X1.9 flare was recorded at 05:49 MSK on December 1 from returning active region 4274 at the Sun’s northeast limb.
- Emissions are not currently Earth-directed, with the rotating active center forecast to become geoeffective in the first days of December.
- NOAA reports a very large near-side sunspot complex measuring about 1,600 units, divided into groups 4296, 4294 and 4298.
- IKI RAN says the unusually quiet complex may be accumulating energy for a larger eruption, and notes active region 4274 is listed as 4299 in its tracking.
- Researchers point out that region 4274 previously launched October CMEs and five X-class flares in early November, and any Earth-facing eruptions could disrupt power, radio and navigation and expand auroral visibility.
