Summer Streets Returns to Manhattan, Opening More Than 20 Miles of Car-Free Roads

City traffic controls and transit reroutes are being used to shift street space to walking, biking and free community programming.

Overview

  • New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn formally kicked off the Manhattan segment in Foley Square on Saturday, marking the start of three consecutive Manhattan weekends of Summer Streets.
  • The DOT closed major roadways and bridges on the route, including the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge, creating more than 20 miles of continuous car-free space for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • The event offers free community programming such as fitness classes, cultural performances, Citi Bike rides, art installations, food trucks and community runs along the route.
  • Drivers face parking restrictions along the route and MTA buses are being rerouted with signs at affected stops, while festivities on the route run roughly from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Summer Streets already ran in Queens and Staten Island and will continue in Manhattan on two more Saturdays before concluding with events in Brooklyn and the Bronx on Aug. 22.
