Overview
- The Suminoe pumping station in Osaka was flooded during heavy rain on June 26, submerging the pump room on basement level 5 and putting all six rainwater pumps out of service.
- Mayor Yokoyama confirmed on June 29 that recovery will take several years because engines and other equipment must be replaced rather than simply repaired.
- Osaka City estimates replacement costs at about ¥30 billion and says the pumps’ loss reduces the system that lifts overflow from the Naniwa diversion tunnel into the Sumiyoshi River.
