Sudbury Crews Work Around the Clock to Manage Flooding

Saturated soils mean the expected 20–30 mm of rain could trigger fast runoff with flooded streets.

Overview

  • City staff are running lift stations, sewer networks, and water plants 24 hours a day to handle high flows and cut the risk of sewage backups.
  • Localized flooding is already affecting parts of Greater Sudbury as road teams monitor water levels, close unsafe stretches, and urge drivers to avoid standing water.
  • Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for 20 to 30 millimetres of rain with a chance of thunderstorms, and Conservation Sudbury has a flood warning for area waterways.
  • Residents in low-lying areas are urged to check sump pumps, move valuables out of basements, clear nearby storm grates only if it is safe, and call 311 to report sewer or drainage issues.
  • Public Health advises people to avoid contact with flood water, boil private well water for now, disinfect and test wells after waters recede, and watch for city notices if sandbag sites are opened.
