Subnautica 2 Hits 5 Million Sales and Prompts Krafton to Build a Franchise

Krafton will scale Subnautica into a long-term IP after reporting the game’s rapid early access sales.

Overview

  • Krafton disclosed on Wednesday in its second-quarter report that Subnautica 2 sold more than 5 million copies just 22 days after its May 14 early access launch.
  • The sales helped drive Krafton to a record Q2 revenue of KRW 1.29 trillion and an operating profit of KRW 410.9 billion while the company still showed a KRW 29.9 billion net profit deficit from acquisition and earnout costs.
  • A U.S. court earlier sided with ousted Unknown Worlds leaders, a settlement expanded bonuses to current studio staff, and Ted Gill later left the studio voluntarily.
  • Unknown Worlds continues to update Subnautica 2 in early access with a roadmap toward a 1.0 launch and Krafton has said it will maintain stable service through full release.
  • The breakout sales widened the player base, with Krafton citing co-op content as a factor, and the company’s franchise push could mean more sequels, crossovers, and merchandising as earnout and acquisition costs remain under scrutiny.
