Study: Human-Driven Warming Raised Sea Temperatures Across European Waters

By quantifying the human contribution to record ocean heat, the analysis shows fossil-fuel emissions are driving stress on marine ecosystems.

  • The World Weather Attribution study released Aug. 18–19, 2026 concluded that human-caused climate change was the main driver of this summer’s record sea temperatures around Europe.
  • Researchers estimated climate change added roughly 2°C to the Mediterranean and about 1.3–1.4°C to Western European seas, with coastal buoys and Copernicus monitoring recording locally extreme highs.
  • The analysis found a large expansion in marine heatwave area this year, for example about 90% of the Bay of Biscay and 80% of the western Mediterranean were affected compared with much smaller extents in a simulated world without warming.
  • Scientists linked the warming to clear ecological and economic impacts, reporting species shifts such as octopuses moving north, jellyfish blooms clogging infrastructure, and disruptions to fisheries and aquaculture.
  • Warmer seas also raise coastal humidity and overnight temperatures and can add energy to storms, increasing risks to coastal communities and signaling likely longer-term pressure on food and incomes tied to the ocean.
