Study Finds Potentially Hazardous Chemicals in Most Popular Hair Extensions

Use is widespread among Black women, raising equity concerns.

Overview

  • The Silent Spring Institute tested 43 synthetic and bio-based products and reported 41 contained chemicals considered potentially hazardous, with only items labeled “non-toxic” testing free of them.
  • Researchers detected more than 900 chemical signatures and identified 169 substances in nine structural classes, including flame retardants, phthalates, pesticides, styrene, tetrachloroethane and organotin compounds.
  • Several findings intersect with health regulations, as 48 substances appear on international risk lists, 12 are listed under California’s Proposition 65 and organotin compounds in some samples exceeded European Union safety thresholds.
  • The study warns of exposure through prolonged contact with the scalp and skin as well as inhalation of chemicals released during heated styling.
  • Authors urge clearer ingredient disclosure and regulatory review, noting a fast-growing market projected to surpass $14 billion by 2028.
