Overview
- A magnitude 7.8 earthquake off Mindanao on June 8 caused dozens of deaths, hundreds of injuries and displaced thousands, and search-and-rescue and shelter operations are still under way.
- The Philippine seismology agency Phivolcs has recorded thousands of aftershocks since the June 8 event and reported preliminary field surveys showing about 2 metres of coastal uplift and shoreline extension of up to roughly 200 metres.
- A separate magnitude 6.2 quake struck offshore Mindanao on June 15 at about 112 km depth, and Phivolcs said its epicentre on the Philippine Trench was not linked to the June 8 quake while the USGS issued a Green alert for low tsunami and damage risk.
- A shallow magnitude 6.7 hit near Palu, Central Sulawesi on June 16, producing strong shaking that forced hospital evacuations, caused scattered building damage and aftershocks, and prompted local damage assessments with no immediate tsunami threat reported.
- Authorities and aid groups are continuing damage surveys, restoring utilities and coordinating international relief as geologists warn exposed seabed, damaged coral and landslide risk could prolong impacts on fisheries, roads and coastal communities.
