Overview
- The offshore earthquake, which struck Monday off the Sanriku coast, was about M7.5 with shallow depth near 10 km and produced JMA intensity 5-upper shaking in Aomori, prompting tsunami warnings.
- The Japan Meteorological Agency reported tsunami waves off eastern Aomori and Iwate, with some observations around 80 centimeters after forecasting up to 3 meters for parts of Hokkaido’s Pacific coast and Iwate.
- Following the alerts, JR Central suspended Tokaido Shinkansen service between Tokyo and Shizuoka due to a power outage, and major convenience store chains temporarily closed about 100 locations in Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate for safety.
- Taiwan’s president, Lai Ching-te, wrote in Japanese on X that Taiwan is ready to provide assistance if Japan requests it.
- The latest shock came two days after a separate M5.0 quake in Omachi, Nagano, where the government opened a cabinet liaison room as the JMA urged caution for about a week of similar shaking.
