Stowaway Red Fox From UK Now Under Care at Bronx Zoo After Transatlantic Voyage

Veterinarians at the Bronx Zoo are conducting routine screenings to clear the animal for long-term placement.

Overview

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered the fox among cargo when the ship arrived at the Port of New York and New Jersey on Feb. 18.
  • The vessel departed Southampton on Feb. 4, and the animal was transferred to the Bronx Zoo the next day, Feb. 19.
  • Zoo officials identify the fox as an approximately 2-year-old male weighing about 11 pounds, with initial exams indicating good condition.
  • CBP agriculture specialists coordinated with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA APHIS, and New Jersey Fish and Wildlife to secure care at the zoo.
  • Authorities have not disclosed how or when the fox boarded the ship, and a permanent home will be selected after routine health checks are complete.
