Storm Tailwinds Push Galicia Flights to Rare 1,150–1,200 km/h Ground Speeds

Flight-tracking data points to a powerful west tailwind that inflated GPS ground speed beyond typical domestic values.

Overview

  • Local air traffic in Galicia returned largely to normal the day after widespread cancellations and diversions.
  • A Vueling A321-231 (EC-MMH) from Barcelona to A Coruña turned back near its destination due to unsafe winds and then recorded up to about 1,150 km/h ground speed on the return to Barcelona.
  • Passengers on the Vueling flight spent roughly three hours in the air, about two outbound and one on the tailwind-assisted return.
  • Other aircraft in the same flow, including an Air India New YorkMumbai flight and a Saudi service from New York to Jeddah, exceeded about 1,200 km/h over Galicia and near Barcelona.
  • Tracking apps report ground speed affected by wind, which differs from indicated airspeed measured by the pitot system, making such high readings unusual on domestic routes without signaling any technical issue.
