Storm Pedro Delivers Southern Downpours and Hill Snow as UK Issues Yellow Warnings

Forecasters say conditions will ease from Thursday with a milder spell developing into the weekend.

Overview

  • Met Office yellow warnings cover heavy rain across southern England until 8am Thursday, snow for Wales and the West Midlands from 4pm Wednesday to 6am Thursday, and rain, hill snow and strong winds in Northern Ireland until 8pm Wednesday.
  • Rainfall of 10–20mm is expected widely with up to 30mm near the south coast and around 50mm on Dartmoor, while snow of 2–5cm is likely above 150–200m and 10–15cm above 250–300m in parts of mid and southeast Wales, Herefordshire, Shropshire and the southern Pennines.
  • The Met Office expanded the snow warning north into the Pennines on Wednesday morning as guidance highlighted elevation-driven accumulations and locally sharp contrasts over short distances.
  • The Environment Agency reports more than 200 flood alerts and about 80 flood warnings, with officials cautioning about hazardous travel, possible stranded vehicles, power or mobile outages and impacts worsened by strong east to north‑easterly winds.
  • Named by Meteo France, Storm Pedro’s bands are forecast to clear east late Wednesday into Thursday before a notable warm-up pushes weekend temperatures into the low to mid‑teens.
