Storm Pauses Philadelphia July 4 Parkway Concert

Officials ordered an evacuation for lightning and high winds and allowed a limited return once the threat passed.

Overview

  • City officials stopped the One Philly: Unity Concert on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway Saturday night and used recorded announcements, X posts and text alerts to tell attendees to exit and seek shelter at protected locations including SEPTA's Suburban Station.
  • The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning that forecast lightning, torrential rain and wind gusts up to about 60 miles per hour during the concert window.
  • Philadelphia’s managing director Adam K. Thiel said safety was the top priority and that decisions on resuming the show would be made by the Emergency Operations Center after conditions were deemed safe.
  • After the storm passed, the city invited people to re-enter the perimeter and resumed a reduced program featuring The Roots and a planned fireworks finale while the participation of planned headliners Christina Aguilera, Meek Mill and Will Smith remained unconfirmed.
  • The interruption disrupted the America 250 celebration schedule, left a late-night crowd that largely stayed calm, and prompted a large cleanup and stage breakdown the next morning as city crews restored the Parkway.
