Storm Nils Slams Catalonia, Forcing ES‑Alert, School Closures and Major Transport Disruptions

Winds are expected to ease this afternoon, with elevated risk from an approaching storm named Oriana.

Overview

  • - Catalonia issued a rare ES-Alert as authorities suspended all schools and universities, halted non-urgent health services, closed parks and natural areas, and urged teleworking and avoiding outdoor activities.
  • - Official stations confirmed extreme gusts, including 166.7 km/h at Puig Sesolles, around 140 km/h in the Montseny area, about 114 km/h at Montserrat, and near or above 100 km/h in parts of the Barcelona metro area.
  • - Rail operations faced inspections, speed restrictions and targeted shutdowns, with Rodalies suspending shuttle services on R4 (Terrassa–Manresa) and R1 (Blanes–Maçanet), an interruption on R4 between L’Hospitalet and Sant Feliu due to a fallen tree, and impacts on R11 and RG1 near Girona.
  • - Emergency services logged more than 1,300 calls linked to the wind episode as roads saw debris and fallen trees, while coastal alerts warned of dangerous seas with waves up to eight meters in parts of Galicia and around five meters along sections of the Catalan coast.
  • - Aviation and broader travel were disrupted, including flight diversions and cancellations at A Coruña’s Alvedro airport, as Barcelona’s airport implemented precautionary measures and forecasters signaled another storm, Oriana, arriving from Friday.
