Storm Damage Keeps Mediterranean Rail Corridor Shut as Madrid–Valladolid AVE Partially Reopens After Fatal Strike

Severe washouts alongside lightning-hit signaling make restoration a slow, machinery-heavy operation constrained by weather.

Overview

  • Adif pushed back the target to restore parts of the Mediterranean corridor to 17:00 on Oct. 14 after fresh damage, including a 150‑meter stretch where ballast was completely washed away.
  • Work trains with ballast hoppers, a tamper and a regulator are operating between Ulldecona and L’Aldea as roughly 100 technicians tackle track, catenary and signaling repairs.
  • A lightning strike at Benicarló damaged a signaling building, forcing replacement of electronic cards, cabling and connections.
  • Renfe canceled up to 27 services and kept the R16 segment between Tortosa and Ulldecona suspended, offering a road link between Tortosa and Vinaròs.
  • The Madrid–Valladolid high‑speed line, shut after a fatal pedestrian strike at km 142 near Hornillos de Eresma, reopened at 14:45 on Oct. 14 on a single track at reduced speed, with at least a dozen trains affected and the second track still closed.
