Storm-Battered Tricity Sees Power Largely Restored, Mohali Still Endures Long Outages

Authorities attribute repair delays to vegetation damage and severe lineman shortages.

Overview

  • Chandigarh’s utility reported the 11 kV network stable on Saturday with no active breakdowns and said over 95% of 905 outage complaints were resolved that day after 3,144 were handled on Friday.
  • In Mohali, several sectors faced outages lasting more than 36 hours following snapped lines and fallen poles, which also curtailed water supply where pumps and treatment plants lost power.
  • PSPCL personnel acknowledged limited local capacity for major repairs, and the workers’ union said roughly 244 of 364 sanctioned lineman posts in the Mohali circle remain vacant.
  • The storm caused 182 breakdowns and at least 37 damaged poles in Chandigarh and led to widespread tree falls, traffic blockages and injuries, including three children hurt in a Manimajra roof collapse.
  • IMD and SDMA issued fresh alerts for thunderstorms and warned of additional rain next week, raising the prospect of renewed disruptions as repairs continue.
