Stolen SUV Crashes Into Oakland Patrol Vehicle, Killing Two and Injuring an Officer

Toxicology alongside forensic tests are under way to determine the cause of the crash.

Overview

  • A stolen SUV struck an uninvolved marked Oakland Police Department patrol SUV near East 12th Street and 29th Avenue, then spun out and flipped, throwing two occupants from the vehicle who died at the scene.
  • An Oakland Housing Authority police officer had attempted a traffic stop for reckless driving earlier but did not pursue the vehicle, and that same officer took the driver into custody after the crash.
  • The driver was arrested, transported to a hospital and listed in stable condition, and an Oakland officer injured in the collision was also taken to a hospital and listed stable.
  • Police say the crash was not the result of a chase and have confirmed the SUV was stolen while investigators continue forensic work to determine whether alcohol or drugs were factors.
  • Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact OPD’s Traffic Section as the two deceased remain unnamed pending family notification and investigators complete testing.
