Stolen Hyundai T-Bones Minnesota State Patrol Car, Seriously Injuring Trooper

Officials say the same Hyundai fled police the night before, underscoring concern over repeat dangerous driving.

Overview

  • The stolen Hyundai that t-boned a State Patrol squad in south Minneapolis late Friday ran a stop sign at West 46th Street and Aldrich Avenue South at about 80 mph, according to the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office.
  • A Ramsey County deputy spotted the car around 10:30 p.m. in St. Paul's Highland Park, tried to stop it, briefly followed it across the Ford Parkway Bridge, then ended the pursuit after losing sight.
  • Officials say a State Patrol helicopter was tracking the Hyundai as it drove with its lights off in south Minneapolis and no ground units were chasing it when it hit the squad car.
  • The trooper was extricated from the squad and taken to the hospital, and authorities said the two passengers from the stolen car also suffered serious injuries.
  • Police reports tie the same Hyundai to a west metro pursuit the night before that involved swerving at emergency vehicles, and officials say the arrested 19-year-old has two prior fleeing arrests and is now held in Ramsey County Jail.
