Stockport’s Greek Street Bridge and Armoury Roundabout Reopen After £20m Rebuild

The £20m rebuild secures the route for decades with space reserved for a potential Metrolink link.

Overview

  • Traffic has returned to the Greek Street junction after a year-long closure to replace the 1958 bridge over the West Coast Main Line next to Stockport station.
  • The scheme removed about 200 old concrete beams and installed a new bridge built from 51 parts, including 18 oversized sections delivered under police escort during a three-week rail shutdown last August.
  • Network Rail and contractor Murphy completed the project, with Network Rail saying the upgrade secures both the road above and the railway below for the next 120 years.
  • Month after month of diversions hit residents and traders, with Castle Street businesses reporting lost footfall and The Armoury pub saying it survived only with brewery support before celebrating the reopening.
  • The finished layout adds new pedestrian routes, keeps the much-loved Edgeley Station mosaic, and leaves room for possible tram-train services as part of Stockport Council’s wider transport plan.
