Steve Kerr Calls for Overhaul of NBA’s 65-Game Awards Rule as Stars Face Ineligibility Risk

Adopted in 2023–24 to curb load management, the rule counts only games of at least 20 minutes.

Overview

  • Speaking in Detroit, Kerr said the awards eligibility threshold "needs to be revamped."
  • Kerr pointed to Draymond Green’s All-Defensive case, noting 56 games played include five under the 20-minute mark with 15 Warriors games remaining.
  • Blazer’s Edge, citing Sportico, identified Deni Avdija, Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokic as players close to missing All-NBA or other honors.
  • Draymond Green condemned the policy while discussing Cade Cunningham, who has 61 games played and is out at least two weeks with a collapsed lung.
  • The policy includes two exceptions that allow 15–20 minute appearances to count, and postseason awards can unlock raises, incentives and bonuses.
