Stephen Fleming Appointed England Test Coach and Joe Root Reappointed Captain

The ECB says the changes are meant to reset England’s red-ball programme after recent defeats following Ben Stokes' retirement.

Overview

  • The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed the appointments on Thursday, naming Stephen Fleming head coach and reinstating Joe Root as Test captain.
  • Marcus Trescothick will act as interim head coach for the three-Test series with Pakistan that begins on August 19 while Fleming joins the setup later in the summer.
  • Fleming will take full charge in time to prepare England for the Test tour of South Africa and to begin rebuilding ahead of next summer’s Ashes.
  • Brendon McCullum has been removed from the Test coaching role but will remain England’s white-ball coach, creating a separation of responsibilities between formats.
  • Fleming brings an 18-year record with Chennai Super Kings, including five IPL titles, and the ECB says his experience will be used to stabilise leadership, develop young talent and restore consistency after recent on-field losses and off-field incidents.
